Hello everyone! Another week has gone by and I am pretty stoked to tell you the story behind some of these images. This week we celebrated Iu-Mien New Year which also happens to fall on the same day as Chinese New Year. The tradition is that we have a cookout, invite lots of relatives to welcome the new year with us, and dye eggs red!
First, you boil the eggs (brown is best) and use a very special red powder dye from Thailand (it stains like crazy) mixed with clear vodka. The eggs represent good luck and health throughout the year–so you have to make sure they don’t break. Guess what happens if it breaks? It will smell really bad, haha. It was my first year dyeing them at my friend Gen’s house and introducing the kids to this tradition. I have to ask my mom to send over the red dye powder so I can start next year with the children.
Other than that, we had our typical school routine!
